Serial, the Peabody Award-winning true crime podcast narrated by journalist Sarah Koenig, returns to the airwaves for Season Three on September 20, Variety reports. But fans of the first two seasons can expect Koenig to switch up its format this time around.
A spokesperson for Serial only said, 'Over the last few months they've been reporting on a variety of stories for both Seasons 2 and 3 of Serial, along with other podcast projects.' The first episode of the season was released, without any previous release date announcement, on December 10, 2015. Serial is heading back to court. This time, in Cleveland. In Season One, Serial focused on Baltimore teenager Adnan Syed's conviction for the murder of girlfriend Hai Min Lee. Season Two discussed the story of Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S. soldier who was captured by the Taliban. But Season Three will take a look at Cleveland's justice system and document multiple cases—not just one.
'I think it’s hard to say based on one case, and especially one case that’s not your typical [case],' Koenig told Elle.com. '[Syed] wasn’t the usual kind of defendant that you see. He has no criminal record. He has this private attorney. This kid goes to trial and has, not one, but two trials, and they last a long time. And some of that is sort of what’s really happening in our system, all day long in our courthouses.'
Just because the new season will explore different cases, however, doesn't mean Koenig won't dive deep into each individual story. 'Some of the stories do last more than one episode.. so people do come back and their cases come back, but they’re not so tightly linked,' she added.
Nagin Serial Season 3 Release Date
Emmanuel Dzotsi, a reporter who was raised in Ohio, will join Koenig this season. Julie Snyder will return as executive producer. Dreamspark.
According to Variety, Koenig and Dzotsi spent an entire year studying Cleveland's judicial system, and decided to choose it as the focal point of Season Three because of the immense amount of access the were given to courtroom records, judges’ chambers, and attorney offices.
